6 Implementable Math Read Aloud Books for 2nd Grade

Can you read a book during a math lesson? The answer is yes, of course you can! I love implementing read aloud books during my math lessons that demonstrate the math skill I’m teaching.

Literacy incorporation into other subjects is called interdisciplinary instruction. By reading to your students during math, it will increase their desire to learn and give them a visual understanding of how the math skill works.

In a previous post I shared my first list of 7 Engaging Math Read Aloud Books for 2nd Grade. Today I’d love to share with you even more books you can use to increase engagement before or during your math lesson. I hope you check them out!

Mission: Addition

by Loreen Leedy

This cute read aloud book uses animal detectives to review and reinforce addition in everyday life. The characters demonstrate adding two numbers and multiple numbers, providing the steps for each. She also teaches students how to double check the sum.

Skill: Number stories and Operations

Spaghetti & Meatballs for All

by Marilyn Burns

Learning area and perimeter can be a more challenging skill for students. This book shows how useful area and perimeter are when you have a family reunion, trying to get all the family around many tables. Make sure to stop periodically to discuss the geometric skills that are going on throughout the story.

Skill: Number stories and Area and Perimeter

The Big Buck Adventure

by Shelley Gill and Deborah Tobola

Who doesn’t like buying things? In this read aloud book, one girl with one dollar goes out to the store but soon realizes the perplexity of the choices around her. This story shows how buying things in real life work.

Skill: Money

The Greedy Triangle

by Marilyn Burns

This engaging read aloud book is about a triangle wanting more for its life so it becomes other shapes to try to fulfill itself. He goes on a journey of being other shapes, which is a fantastic way to introduce shape names for your students. By the end he understands his importance of being a triangle.

Skill: Geometry

The Hershey’s Kisses Subtraction Book

by Jerry Pallotta

Yum, chocolate! This book demonstrates subtraction in a very fun way. The author also puts in subtraction word problems in the story, while introducing the concept that addition is the opposite of subtraction. You can use this book to teach and reteach the concrete concept of subtraction.

Skill: Subtraction

Three Pigs, One Wolf and Seven Magic Shapes

by Marilyn Burns

Here’s a math twist on the classic tale of the 3 Little Pigs. As the pigs leave their homes, each meets animals from magical shapes and uses the shapes to make other things to try to save themselves from the wolf. A perfect extension to this book is having students use only 7 pattern blocks to create a magical thing and write a story about it.

Skill: Shapes

I hope these are a great addition to your math books library!
